Tranquillity is the beauty of Banks Peninsula, Christchurch.

The Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum is a collection of buildings containing 20,000 Maori and 19th-century colonial art crafts, including waka (canoes) used in Waitangi Day celebrations and displays such as a smithy and print shop.

The world well-known movie Whale Rider increases the public's interest in Maori culture.

No matter you are Maori or migrants, men or women, adults or children, just jump into the waka and give it a go. NEW experiments and rules take place as this is NEW ZEALAND.

It is said that Maori originally came from China thousands of years ago. Believe it or not.

Following the Christmas madness, 6 February is always a welcome day off but, as our national day, Waitangi Day marks the most significant moment in this country’s history when representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840 at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, Northland. The Treaty formed the foundation of a new nation and saw New Zealand become part of the British Empire.

In recent times, the Waitangi commemoration has often been the focus of protest and marked by controversy. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Waitangi and Waitangi Day became a focus of protest concerning treaty injustices.

Despite the protests, celebrations continue. Okains Bay in Banks Peninsula, 45minutes drive from Christchurch city, is an especially great place to celebrate Waitangi Day.
