Brain-tease at Wanaka's Puzzling World, New Zealand

2008.01.13
Crystal clear lake waters lap the shores of Wanaka town and the feet of the Southern Alps, which are home to winter ski fields and the dramatically alpine Mount Aspiring National Park.

Puzzling World is set amongst 7 acres of rolling lawns, trees and gardens, 2kms from the Wanaka lakefront (viewed from Mt Iron Scenic Reserve). It includes the world's first "modern-styled" Great Maze, incredible Illusion Rooms, unique toilets and more brain-teasers.

The Leaning Tower of Wanaka is balanced on one corner at an unbelievable 53 degrees! The Leaning Tower of Pisa only leans six degrees.

Surely you feel dizzy in the Dazzle Room. Why?

The Tilted House is tilted at an angle of fifteen degrees. All the displays inside are normal yet when you enter the room the illusion is so strong that your brain is convinced the room cannot be sloping. The brain straightens up the room at the expense of the displays that seem to hang at impossible angles.

We are taught that water always goes downhill. But here you SEE water running up hill. Why?

Out of thousands of illusion images at Puzzling World, this is the simple one you can catch it easily.

The Ames Forced Perspective Room - its shape is totally distorted although when viewed from outside through a window, the room looks perfectly normal. The technique of this illusion was used in The Lord of the Rings film to create tall people and little people.

Ellen shrinks and grows in a few seconds.

In the Hall of Following Faces illusion room, stand back three metres, close one eye. Walk sideways back and forth at least three times. On the third or forth time 168 giant models of famous faces seem to turn and follow you around the room!

Hands on hundreds of puzzles to check if your brain and eyes function better after a tour in Puzzling World.

Toilet is a must-do at Wanaka's Puzzling World.

Apart from the usual ladies and gents, there is a third room - Roman-style toilets!

Are you ready to take a $50,000 challenge at Puzzling World?

You will get a wonderful birdview of Wanaka Lake and Puzzling World if you walk up to the top of Mt Iron Scenic Reserve.
