Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior Onboard Tour-Christchurch,NZ

2008.03.22
Rainbow Warrior II carries on the Greenpeace campaign in New Zealand - target climate change, urgeing the New Zealand government to set up the target of reducing a third of greenhouse gas emission by 2020.

BE A CLIMATE KIWI, BE A FUN

I am on target to save the climate. Why are not you?

The tragic bombing in Auckland harbour absolutely destroyed the Rainbow Warrior I by the French secret service on 10 July 1985. The new Rainbow Warrior II (what we see now) set sail four years after the bombing.

Kids love the free face-painting of whale, seal, penguin, kiwi bird and rainbow.

Maite, a Greenpeace staff from Spain (the lady wearing a green kiwi bird T-shirt at the far right corner) explains the history of Rainbow Warrior I.

16 staff with 12 nationalities are currently working on the Rainbow Warrior II.

A Greenpeace staff from Germany (the man in the middle) demonstrates the daily work and life on the Rainbow Warrior II.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) generated from factories, farms, households, cars, planes, ships...contributes to the global warming.

The sticker board witnesses the various conservation programmes around the world.

A Greenpeace staff from Ghana encourages the public to become Greenpeace supporters.

A Greenpeace staff from Brazil introduces the tale of the wooden sculpture of whale standing in front of the Rainbow Warrior II.

Greenpeace - fight against any behaviours demaging the environment in a peaceful way.

Amelia and Ellen on the Rainbow Warrior II on 22 March 2008, three days before the Greenpeace anti-coal protest in Lyttleton Harbour, Christchurch. Three activists had tied themselves to the side of the coal freighter and three others were pulled from an inflatable Greenpeace craft. In spite of a failed attempt to stop a 60000-ton-laden coal ship from leaving Lyttelton Harbour for Europe, Greenpeace does earn a political debate regarding climate change hold on the Rainbow Warrior in Wellington on 2 April 2008.

In New Zealand, almost 50 per cent of our emissions come from the agriculture sector (mainly from the dairy industry). One third of these emissions come from nitrous oxide (from livestock urine and artificial fertiliser) and two-thirds come from methane (primarily from livestock burping…the fart tax was in fact a misnomer), Greenpeace NZ claims. A possible solution funded by NZ government: An Australia-New Zealand biotechnology partnership is creating a new kind of grass that will reduce cattle burps and improve productivity.

Our daily choices do help to reduce our carbon footprints.

Individuals, communities and businesses may take action now.

get climate change better not worse

New Zealanders well remember the tragic bombing in Auckland harbour of the Rainbow Warrior by the French secret service on 10 July 1985. The new Rainbow Warrior set sail four years after the bombing. The Rainbow Warrior is visiting New Zealand to further Greenpeace’s international work to prevent dangerous levels of climate change, by highlighting the issues and promoting solutions.

Amelia and Ellen from 2Ways Co. passed twice the identity check and finally stepped on the Rainbow Warrior in Lyttleton Port, Christchurch on 22 March 2008.
