Finally the lovely spring arrives. Is it time for spring-clean? Here it is – an outdoor clean in spring, Clean Up Avon Riverbank, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Garden City, Christchurch, New Zealand.

18 volunteers (including New Zealand born kiwis, migrants from Spain, China and Thailand, and international students from Brazil and HongKong) dirty their hands to clean up Christchurch Avon Riverbank on 20 September 2008.

The local annual volunteer event was organised since 2003 by 2Ways Company Limited who specialises in tailoring study and tour packages in Christchurch, New Zealand for Catalan, Spanish and Chinese clients. It's a part of the global environmental campaign Clean Up The World.

The little volunteers find it exciting to climb a big tree on the Avon riverbank.

Heritage input - mum (Jennifer Lambert) tells her boys (Nathan and Heyden) the story about the Kate Sheppard Memorial on the Avon riverbank. On 19 September 1893 women's suffrage was made law in New Zealand, the first country in the world to grant women the voting rights.

Poor environmental conditions can affect the economy in may ways, including poor human health, decreased flora and fauna, and reduced tourism opportunities.

Ellen Yule, coordinator of Clean Up Avon Riverbank shakes hand with David Williams, a reporter of The Press (the biggest daily newspaper in Canterbury). The aim of the volunteer event is to raise the public awareness of how individual can do to reduce litter and keep Christchurch beautiful.

Every little action is an essential first step to help reduce the impacts of the biggest global problem - climate change.

Two Kiwi boys (Heyden and Nathan) from the local intermediate school capture six shopping bags' garbage in total.

For domestic and international visitors, the volunteers of Clean Up Avon Riverbank become a part of the pretty scenery in Garden City.

Everyone can play an important part in resolving the problem of the growing amount of waste by avoiding, reducing, reusing and recycling in our daily activities and choices.

Brazilian volunteer is rewarded by a framed photo provided by 2Ways Co.

The group from University of Canterbury also gains a photo reward.
