Working Bees Harvest in Waipara Valley Vineyard, Christchurch New Zealand

2009.04.05
The Waipara Valley is situated 40 minutes drive north of Christchurch. It is the fastest growing wine region in New Zealand with around 80 vineyards in the Waipara Valley covering more than 1,200 hectares of plantings.

The Waipara valley has three general sites - valley floor, hill slopes and river terraces.

The north facing moderately sloping terrain provides an ideal sun trap for fruiting vines.

To avoid birds, net is widely used in vineyards. Falcons are also recently introduced as fruit guards.

Like other volunteers, Ellen is excited to harvest by hands and by camera the grapes they planted 3 years ago.

Each grape looks like a blood cell and some research shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart.

Are these grape bugs the happiest bugs in the world - die in the sweet?

Working Bee - don't be too put off by the 'working' part, people volunteer their time and energy for the hands-on experience, the good feeling of harvest and the wonderful sense of generosity.

Kids are shouting around:'Morning Tea Time!'

The soil types include; gravely deposits on flats and terraces in the central and west of the valley, limestone derived clays on hillsides and valley floor to the eastern side and gravely loams over alluvial subsoil in the southern part of the region.

Kirk Bray, the vineyard owner is an experienced wine maker.

3 tons of grapes collected today will be processed immediately at the same day.
