Festival of Walking, an annual event first took place in and around the Lyttelton Harbour basin this Easter on 11 and 12 April 2009. Over 39 walks included Historic Walk, Community Garden Walk, gaol walks, kid’s quiz, Farmstay picnics, Orton Bradley Park, photography walk, island easter egg hunt and cruises village walks in Diamond Harbour.

Lyttelton Harbour, Te Whaka or Te Whaka-raupo (Maori name, "the harbour of the bulrush reeds"), 15-minute drive from Christchurch city, is the sea-filled crater of a volcano that erupted 11 million years ago.
In the middle of the harbour lie three fascinating islands - Quail, Ripapa and King Billy. |
Historic Walk starts from Lyttelton Museum which has an engrossing collection of maritime, colonial, antartic and war displays.

You may take a self-guiding walk anytime, just following these signs between Oxford Street and Canterbury Street.

By 1830 the inhabitants of Lyttelton were a few Maoris, whalers and farmers.
In 1848 Captain Thomas, a surveyor for the Canterbury Association in English was sent to New Zealand to choose a Church of England settlement. |
The first four immigration ships arrived in Lyttelton in December 1850. Over 700 immigrants made their way from water directly to the Immigration Office (on the first floor of the old Post Office building on the right hand side).

This is the site of these Immigration Barracks which housed 300 people and had communal cooking and washing facilities. Some settlers stayed on board while the rest had to put up tents. They stayed here until allocated land or they secured jobs.

Lyttelton Police Station, built in 1880, No. 1 Sumner Road, is the oldest police station in New Zealand. Now Christchurch has the lowest crime rate in the big cities of the country.

Lyttelton Public Library, No. 2 Sumner Road, is opposite the Police Station.
It's said the more libraries the city has the less hospitals and jails. |

This area of Lyttelton Primary School was used to the old Lyttelton Gaol in which the murders and serious thefts were sentenced to be killed by hanging.

These building were used to be occupied by the jail guards and other staff.

It takes about 10minutes to walk uphill to the Timeball Tower for a great harbour view.
|
Built by prisoners from the nearby jail, the Timeball Station is one of about twelve "timeballs" in the world still working. It was used to measure the accuracy of the navigator's chronometer for maritime safety.
Each day, at 1pm New Zealand time, the ball drops with a loud bang, to indicate the exact time. You can see the Timeball and Tower from downtown of Lyttelton. |

The Port of Lyttelton is the main gateway for South Island's economy - export of kiwifruit, NZ beef, lamb, pork, seafood, timber and coal; import of Chinese goods and American tourists by cruisers.
Each year over 1200 ships with a huge volume of goods visit Lyttelton Port. |

About 3000 people are currently living in Lyttelton, plus those who are permanently resting in two cemeteries located in the mid-hill.

Lyttelton Anglican Cemetery is located on Canterbury Street. The first known burial there was 1851.

Lyttelton Catholic Cemetery is located on Reserve Terrace. The first known burial there was 1873. It's the rest place for anyone who was unable to be buried in Lyttelton Anglican Cemetery due to religious reason.

Some of the New Zealand soliders who served in WW1 and WW2 also lie at rest in Lyttelton Catholic Cemetery, with the picturesque sea view.

Resident houses share the stunning landscape with tombs at a little distance.

Across Winchester Street stands Lyttelton’s first Church, Holy Trinity was initially built for the Anglicans in 1853, but then rebuilt in stone 1859-60 because the wooden building collapsed.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church, opposite Holy Trinity Anglican Church, is home to those of mainly Franco-Irish origins.
