Using Mergers to Increase Area of Sharpness...

2008.01.06
A top-down view of a bench-swing in the yard...

Bricks on the side of a house...

Vinyl siding on a tool shed...

Using two jpegs that you have focused near and far respectively, you can create acceptably sharp photos over-all. A sort-of "Faux Hyper-Focal Distance,"...if you will.

This, of course, requires some knowledge of Photo Shop. (I used a try-out version of PS Elements 6.0 to do these edits.) The tools I chose to create some nice re-mixes, included a polygonal-lasso tool (to carve-out the sharp portion of the second jpeg,) layer-by-cut (and deleted the blurred layer,) free-transformation of layer, skewing the layer, eraser at about 1/5 strength, smudge tool, blur tool, sharpen tool all at about the same 1/5 strength, merged layers, and saved the creation with a new name.

I hope these impromptu lessons help somebody...I in no wise mean to infer that I am smarter than anybody else on this site. Since I am self-taught, think of it as one man walking through the desert of digital editting. When I find a oasis, I would be pretty cruel not to tell others where it is.

I hope you feel the same way! Just a few tips from one friend to another! Be Blessed! Stan :)

lealani That is pretty cool! I just bought the PS Elements 6.0...I'm having fun, but I don't think I'm anywhere near what you are talking about :)

777STAN Go ahead and try , Lealani! I am sure that you will surprise yourself! Though I'm grateful for the vote of confidence, I don't really consider myself to be "all that!"

I have been blessed with much to help me in my work, but I always remember that these are gifts that have been given to me by the LORD! The one that I think serves me best in digital editting is patience/longsuffering.

Anyone with patience to "stay-at-it" long enough, and the grace to see "mistakes" as valued tutors,...can do what I do, and as the LORD lovingly spoke, "Do greater works than these!"

(Though I am no miracle worker, I like the principle of blessing & encouraging those whom I teach. I have certainly been blessed by those who taught me...)

777STAN Thank You, Christine! I am honored! I'm sure that it is no harder than learning how to ski down the Alps. After you "break your face" a few times, you learn where the "rocks" are located! :} Give it a try! I know you can do it! :)
