Hibiscus: My Highest Floral Gift for Peng Che!

2008.03.21

"Hibiscus -just the name paints up a picture of tropical sun, deep blue pacific waters and colorful blooms. Although this is true for the widely famous Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. the genus is wide and varied, consisting of around 250 different species, not all tropical as native hibiscus species are represented on all continents except Antarctica." Definition copied from information on a page about Tropical Hibiscus

Since most of my teen years were spent in Florida, it is little wonder that the hibiscus is my favorite flower. Tropical Hibiscuses have the added feature of the word, "sinensis," which to my understanding means "pertaining to China."

This, of course, should make the gift even more personal to Ms. Peng Che! Blessings! May the God of Peace give you the Peace that lasts during this time of difficulty (and always.)

Sincerely, Stan :)

meiling Absolutely beautiful, Stan. Here in Spain we have many hybrids of the hibiscus, too, but I have yet to see any of these. Thank you for sharing this gift with Peng Che and Emme, and with all of us.

777STAN Thank You all for your encouragement! These particular hibiscus blooms were found in Jacksonville, Florida, one year while I was down there for the Reunion of my Mom's family.

I think that it is kind of funny that this bush was one the accents underneath a sign at the entrance to a mall parking lot. THAT is my entire point about keeping your eyes open every day for unique beauty in out-of-the-way places.

I have seen many varieties of hibiscuses in Florida (both singles and doubles.)

The singles (whether white, red, yellow or orange) they all seem to have the feature of the purple "Crown of Thorns" in the center of the bloom.

The doubles are that variety in one of two ways. Multiple petals at the base making it appear to be a Confederate Rose, or it can be a single hibiscus with extra petals around the "head" of the stamen.

I will be looking for some excellent blooms from Spain, Mei Ling, in a few months. (Even in South Georgia hibiscus bushes don't really don't come into their own until June - August.)

Thank You for sharing my love of a most glorious bloom! Thank You for the privilege of being asked to help in such a worthy cause!
