Dujiangyan water conservancy project is west of the city of Dujiangyan on the northwestern Chengdu Plain in Sichuan Province of China. It was built to tame the Min River in 256 B.C. under the direction of Li Bing, the governor of the Shu Prefecture of the Qin State.
It consists mainly of three projects: Yuzui Dyke, a diversion work for automatically regulating the water level of the Min River; Feishayan, a spillway for discharging flood and silt; and Baopingkou, a channel cut through Mount Yulei as a water inlet.
After its completion, there has been a gravity irrigation system which makes the Chengdu Plain "a land of plenty with the benefit of irrigation and flood control and free from famine". Over 2200 years, Fulong Temple, Erwang Temple and Yulei Fairyland have been the places to revere and enshrine Li Bing and his son and others who made great contribution for creating and improving Dujiangyan Weir.
At present, Dujiangyan is still playing a pivotal anti-flood and irrigation role. It is also a world cultural heritage and well-known resort.
