Kusatsu and Mt. Asama

2008.03.21
Starting the day with a nice Japanese style breakfast!

This is called Yubanotake in the heart of Kusatsu town. The hot spring water is piped here first and run through these long channels. This allows some of the sulfur to precipitate out before it is sent to the spas.

Half way down the Yubanotake

At the end of the Yubanotake

This shop makes "onsen manju". they are flour buns stuffed with sweet beans and steamed using the hot spring water.

Another shop, this one sells freshly charcoal grilled sea critters.

The "onsen", hot spring, water flows through the whole town and pops up in lots of little places. Here you can see the sulfur that has deposited on this fountain.

These are "onsen tamago", hot spring eggs. These are eggs soft boiled in the hot spring water.

On our way to Mt. Asama. an active volcano.

Mt. Asama to the left and the Onioshidashi lava flow and park on the right. We got here a bit late so we couldn't explore, maybe next time!

One of my friends from school offered to drive us all to the famous hot spring town of Kusatsu, about two hours north west of Maebashi
