Nebuta Matsuri
2008.08.01
This is a small nebuta that was on display in the city hall. It was the only one we got to see without a plastic cover.
The nebuta are made from a wire frame covered with paper. They have electric lights inside. One of the big floats takes all year to create and cost about $40,000.

We don't know these people, but they are wearing the typical festival dress. Every one is encouraged to buy or rent this costume and dance in the parade. Maybe next year.

During the parade there is a row of drums, a group of flutes, a bunch of dancers, and then a float. The drumming shakes everything. The only way to really experience this is to be there.
This was not nearly the biggest drum.

We took a bus tour to the Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori and the Kanto Matsuri in Akita. Here we are at the Nebuta Matsuri. We enjoyed seeing the large, colorful paper floats. Unfortunately, it was quite rainy, so the floats were wrapped in plastic during the parade.
