Day 1-London Calling...

2007.12.14

What do you do when you have 3 hours to wait for a flight? Sometimes I read, sometimes I meander aimlessly (actually, I do that all the time) and take photos. With an eight hour flight ahead of me, I wanted to meander as much as possible! For awhile I watched people on the floor below heading through Canada Customs. With the dividers set up so symmetrically and waves of people rushing through it was just a great opportunity to play with shutter speeds. I love images which are slightly blurred and I like this one quite a bit.

Still waiting...

Actually, the international terminal at Vancouver Airport is quite well laid out and pretty (at least I think so). I found the aquarium and the duty free shop behind me...

Just like the cropping on this photo...think I may convert it to B&W to see how it looks...

Hallooo fishy...OMG, there's another 2 hours to go...

Only another hour to go...WOOT!!!...Premature celebration...got a phone call from my brother telling me about the airport being on high alert for an emergency landing. No word on when my flight would take off...I was just hoping that the plane would land without incident...

This was the last photo I took in Vancouver in 2007, a little bit before my flight took off for London.

Got in trouble for taking this photo...apparently I missed the numerous and quite large signs indicating photography was not allowed in this area. Oookay, so I'm a wee bit slow! But the reason I was so interested in taking a photo of this sign was due to a past exhibit featuring Huang Yong Ping at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Upon entering his exhibit, you were able to proceed from the left or the right. Above one entrance was a sign that read "Nationals" and above the other entrance, a sign that read "Others," that spoke to the scrutiny of foreigners entering a country-but in this case, you were only entering an art exhibit. That was such an interesting concept for me and part of his inspiration (if I recall correctly) were the signs at airports in Europe pointing EU and non-EU citizens to the correct lines. So I just wanted my own photos of the signs...this one turned out alright...the others will need a smidgen of tweaking at a later date...

The London tube...I love trains and subways of any sort...so this was quite exciting for me...yes, I have a simple mind:)

Tower of London. Didn't have a chance to go in, but it has a really fascinating but bloody history that I would like to learn about at some point. That just means I have to return to London again:)

Tower Bridge.

Tower Bridge from another angle...actually I really like how this is framed:)

Lookie, it's Tower Bridge again...I have more photos of this bridge if anyone is interested;P Just a really beautiful structure, especially at night.

Welcome/Bienvenue/Willkommen to the start of my blogs for my Europe trip! It's taken awhile to sort through all my photos and also think about how I wanted to post these. I'll try to keep things brief with how each of my days unfolded-very much in a diary style so that all of you can relive this with me:)

Without further ado...my little jaunt over the Atlantic started on Dec 14...first stop, London to kick off 21 days of travel and a very much needed break! To get things rolling, my flight was delayed due to an emergency landing of another flight. Thankfully this ended without incident and my flight left about an hour later. Nothing like this to get me all wired for an 8 hour flight:P

Generally on long flights I like to have the aisle seat so I can get up, stretch and also hightail it outta the plane once it lands...well the later is a serious stretch of the imagination as that would involve clambering over heaps of people and bags! So to my left was an older woman, her daughter and then some random guy. I woke from a nap a few hours later and found this woman sleeping with her legs stretched out over my lap...great...just what I wanted. Her daughter asked if I would be able to switch seats so that her Mum could get out a bit easier if she needed to use the loo...no problemo for me.

So now the seating arrangement was the older woman on the aisle, her daughter to her left, me and then the random guy. After another short nap, I woke and found the daughter had pretty much fallen asleep on my shoulder, the mother had stretched out completely across my lap and her daughter's lap AND the random guy was intermittently swearing under his breath and I had nowhere to go:( Did I mention the random guy had also taken off his shoes and it certainly did not smell like roses. <Sigh> ... only another 5 hours to go...

I landed in Heathrow (not my favourite airport...the last time I was here, I just remember running down the corridor with 15 minutes to go before my plane left...not so fun...) and I could not wait to get out to explore! Thankfully my friend Korinna was waiting for me and was an invaluable guide throughout my stay in London! We had a long train ride back to her flat and it was great to catch up after almost 4 years?!

After a snackie, it was out for an evening stroll over Tower Bridge (which is gorgeous at night) and along South Bank. This was a beautiful walk at night and the weather was perfect...clear and a bit crisp. We walked past City Hall, London Bridge, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern and also the Millennium Bridge. After this, I was pretty beat...having lost 8 hours in travel time and it was time for a nappie to rest up for the next day. On the menu for Day 2...ice skating...stay tuned!
