Day 20-Escaping the cold

Early morning at the corner of King and Spadina

Any trip to To must include a visit to SOMA in the distillery district. I would sell a good chunk of my soul to have a piece of chocolate from here, every day of my life (http://www.somachocolate.com/) Just make sure the oompa loompas aren't having a rest day:)

I once told a friend that I would sell another good chunk of my soul to have one of these lemon tarts everyday, for the rest of my life. This is without doubt the best lemon tart ever and I normally don't even like lemon tarts. I think the woman at the counter thought I was insane when I asked her if I could take a photo, right after I devoured one of these. Their chocolate mousse is also to die for...not to mention pretty much anything else they have on the menu...I wonder if I can start a petition to have them open a bakery in Vancouver?! (http://www.brickstreetbakery.com/)

Financial District...I really like this statue for some reason, first time I've ever seen it, as I was taking a little short cut.

Cold, cold, cold…what else can I say? Strangely enough, one of my Aussie roomies at the hostel said it wasn’t so bad. Obviously she was completely off her rocker…-30 C and it’s not so bad…yeah right!

So the goal for the day was to stay warm and even with lots of hot drinks, oodles of snacks, chocolate, more snacks, more hot drinks, it was a difficult task. So having bundled up in about 6 layers, I waddled out the door to one of my favourite cafes anywhere...Le Gourmand (http://www.legourmand.com/). The bread pudding here is absolutely heavenly, great tea selection and the perfect cookies (crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside)!

From here, it was a not so quick jaunt across town to Leslieville for one of the best lattes at Mercury (http://mercuryorganic.blogspot.com/). I would normally have stayed in the area to window shop and browse through knick knacks…but it was too darn cold and I just had to keep moving. So back onto a tram to the Distillery District…if you’ve never been here, make sure you stop here if you ever go to Toronto. This is one cool place! With heritage studio spaces for artists, specialty shops, amazing pastries and one of the best chocolate shops ever, this is one place I miss lots!

After gorging myself on chocolates, another latte, pastries and another piece of chocolate that I’m not sure how I managed to eat, I slowly waddled my way over to Allan Gardens. This is a beautiful escape from the cold in the winter and also has some really nice photo opportunities, once my camera and lens acclimatized and I had warmed up enough to feel my fingers and toes again. Snow was beginning to fall again outside, while I was inside for a while enjoying the fresh smell of plants and feeling nice and toasty.

One of my favourite pastimes when I was living in To was window shopping along Queen Street with friends. There are some really great shops/restaurants and interesting people along the way. Sadly, a friend of mine wrote me about a month ago to tell me that one of the heritage blocks on Queen street burned down…taking along with it residences and some businesses that had been there for a few generations. Have to wait and see what the fate of this block will be.

To end the day, it was a quick dinner with lots of hot drinks and a visit to BCE place. This was a favourite place from the first time I ever went to To. It houses the Hockey Hall of Fame (which I have yet to visit…sad I know, and I call myself Canadian:P ) and I just really love the soaring glass ceiling here. In the day, it looks beautiful, but at night, it really is something else…almost like a glass cathedral. No trip would have been complete without making a stop here.

So for the most part, I managed to stay warm for the day. The really crazy thing was that there were supposed to be above freezing temperatures the next day. Well, I wasn’t betting on it, as I snuggled up into my blankets for a warm and toasty sleep. Next day, it was time to visit the dinosaurs:)

KerBear YAY TORONTO! :) I saw your shots of "BCE Place" on the Browse page and had to come and look at the post!! The arches in the last photo are one of my favorite things to capture... they are gorgeous at Christmas when they have the Icicle style lights hanging from them!!
