The dragon lady of dim sum. She really didn’t like me taking all the tops off the baskets to see what was inside…mostly b/c I wasn’t a local. And she hated the fact that I took the fresh baskets of food that were just put into her cart. No point in asking when you can just help yourself to what you want:)

This was my fav photo of the day. I wandered down an alley and found this cart of dragon fruit and just loved the way it looked. A moment before I took the image, the vendor popped his head up and I just happened to capture this. I love the slightly surprised look on his face.

I still think this is the ugliest city that I’ve ever been to in my travels so far. But the food…ah the food is certainly a saving grace. Everything I ate was just outstanding…nothing fancy, just regular food that I love…rice, noodles, dim sum, pastries…so delicious!
It was just really soggy when I was visiting…typhoon season…so many of my friends asked, why the hell was I visiting southern China during typhoon season?! I have no good answer for this. But I don’t recommend travelling in this region during this period…super humid & soggy, soggy, soggy. There were intermittent downpours throughout the day & I was soaked…kinda yucky.
I started my day at a really old-school dim sum restaurant…Tao Tao Ju Restaurant. This was freaking amazing!!! Food was beyond fabulous. I’ve never had better shrimp dumplings (hao gao) in my life and this is the one food I love more than anything else in the world…I’ve staked out kitchens (to the embarrassment of friends & family) for these when they come out steaming hot, so I know my shrimp dumplings…really well. I love sharing tables with complete strangers…the beauty of eating in Guangzhou & Hong Kong, b/c it’s so crowded, you always share tables and you never feel lonely eating by yourself. I loved listening to the locals bantering with the staff and just the atmosphere of this place. I would put myself on a flight in a heartbeat to eat here again. It was just an incredible pleasure to sit back, eat & drink tea for hours and just people watch. I wish someone would pay me to do this ;P
Afterwards, it was a bit of a jumbled day trying to stay dry. First up was Shamian Dao, a lovely piece of green space in the city. It was undergoing quite a bit of construction while I was there, but I loved walking through the gardens and listening to the rain on the leaves. Reminded me of the rainy days when I’m snuggled up at home, listening to the downpour outside. Then it was onto the Bright Filial Piety Temple. I didn’t really intend to come here, I was just meandering around aimlessly and I needed a momentary respite from the rain. So here I was. This was a lovely place to watch people as they went about their prayers. There was just an incredible calm about the place and I’m really happy that I found my way here.
By this time, I was completely soaked through and just wanted to sit in an air-conditioned space…I normally can’t stand air-conditioning. But it was just so muggy & soggy….ugghh. So off to the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King. Other than the jade burial suit, I wasn’t so impressed with this museum. I think I was so tuckered at this point, I just needed a place to rest & dry out a bit.
Would I come back to Guangzhou? Absolutely…for the food. And, next time around, I hope that I will have done a bit more research into finding the villages that my parents came from and visiting those. Sooo…here is a small sampling of my views of Guangzhou…
