Calm before the storm...this was only a few minutes before I really put myself in the thick of the riot.

These guys were cool...they rapped their disappointment & were not destructive as far as I could tell.

Kick the can progressed to pushing & shoving and after a bit of this, punches were thrown. A full on scrum happened in a matter of seconds & it was far from pretty.

This was a second or two before the cavalry surrounded me on both sides (I was right in the middle of the riot zone). One of them grabbed me by the hair and screamed, "How does it feel now, you little shit?"
First of all, I was trying to move out of the way as they had asked. Second of all, there's a little something in life called karma and I don't doubt this individual will get theirs.
Many thanks to the guys that reached out & pulled me off the sidewalk before I was trampled. Not amused.

At this point, I was so pissed I left. Even after the cavalry were sent in, the rioters were still taunting the police and chucking beer bottles at them.

I am extremely upset as I post this...several hours after I came home from photographing the aftermath of the Canucks loss.
Thanks to the few hooligans that started the skirmishes...it has reaffirmed that this is a city of sore losers. After 1994 & the Olympics, there was promise & hope that the city would not be destroyed again.
Not so. I was front & centre watching cars being burned, fights breaking out and the police officers acting like complete jackasses returning the taunts of the rioters & trash talking with them.
I have nothing good to say at the moment. So angry & disappointed...

You got some fantastic shots out of this. I'm a Bruins fan since I was 4 and I really thought we would lose this game.

Really great captures. Glad you made it out okay. I will never understand how people get that worked up over a game.

Over the past hours following the end of the game I have heard bits and pieces of this horror that you now bring to a new light. I am looking at these in shock knowing these people at one point were just passionate and loyal fans of a team that did not 'succeed' at their skill. It really is scary how we as humans can turn so fast and make these types of gut-reactions to something as trivial as a hockey game. [This coming from someone who grew up in a family where hockey is way up on the list of importance by the way.] Still, no excuse and in the end I am just glad you weren't physically hurt - as I can tell you are emotionally distressed. It will pass, and hopefully the people you've depicted here will themselves up quickly and take a look in the mirror to remember what is really important. Thank you though for this remarkable reportage. This is a big reason why photography remains to be so important.
