Thousands of migrating Tundra Swans have been flying over and making stopovers in the nearby cornfields. A little-known natural wonder, the northward flight of the Arctic tundra swan marks an early sign of spring. Although smaller than the mute and trumpeter varieties, the tundra swan remains a hefty white bird distinctive for its black beak, yellow dot below the eye and gregarious "whoo-who-whoo" cry. Although tundra swans visit Ontario only fleetingly each year, the species is not considered rare. Birders tend to watch them from a distance rather than move in for a close-up picture. A few dos and don'ts apply
to any visit. Be careful parking on the narrow shoulders of the roads. Don't slam the car door and startle the birds. Don't walk into the fields to approach them; forcing them into the air only depletes energy needed for the migration.
