Laimon Mitris was a remarkable, if little known artist. Born in1920 in Latvia, He had spent the last five decades living in Quebec, almost all the time in Rouyn Noranda, Abitibi-Temiscamingue, and making amazing pictures in his own unique style.
Mitris's palette often uses vibrant and vivid colours.He often cut out many pieces of different woods for supports, painting them, and then assembling them into multi-layered constructions. They suggest thesis of celestial bodies, microscopic life, futuristic cityscapes and landscapes or totally abstract forms.
He was a great artist with a diverse production, ranging from total abstraction to the landscape.Though he was born in Latvia, Mitris had lived several years in the area of Rouyn Noranda and was well known in the region. His works are sought by European and American collectors. His region of adoption had made a tribute upon his death in 2009, and there are quite a few of his paintings in buildings and art galleries around the Abitibi-Témiscamingue area.
This particular painting was a commissioned piece which hangs on my office wall!
