Lilo was checking out my daughter's room. My daughter is actually her owner but while she is away at college Mike and I are the owners!!

So Lilo came to live with us in the Fall of 2004. She was a rescue beagle from NorCal Beagle Rescue. She was born in a facility in upstate New York that raises beagles and ferrets strictly for sale to research laboratories all over the world. They debark the beagles as very, very young puppies (under 8 weeks old) and then ship them to the research labs at that age. Once at the local research lab their number is tattooed in their ear and they are placed in the cages they will live for the next 8 months to 1-1/2 years. Tests are done on the dogs or in Lilo's case to the blood they took from her daily. Once the researcher is done with the test they either euthanize the dog if it is too "messed up from the test" or they contact us to take the beagles into care to find homes. We always accept the beagles from research even if we have totally full foster homes.

Since adopting Lilo and having been a volunteer with the NorCal Rescue, Mike and I have fostered about 6-7 of the research laboratory rescues.

Lilo LOVES attention. She will jump up in your lap even if she isn't invited. If you scare her then she lets out a tiny bit of Pee...... thus the name Lilo the Pee-lo.

Lynda Whata a sad indictment of humans that they treat animals so badly but thank goodness there are people like you to save them.

LeahMarie25 That is terrible! I'm so glad that she was rescued. Did it take her long to adapt to life outside of a cage?

????? That's so sad! What kind of tests are that require dogs--can't they use rats or mice?

TheCrazyCroat Judy, you are a Saint. I'm so sad and sickened to hear about Lilo's beginnings. I'm so naive I never knew dogs were bred for such torture. Bless you for helping our beloved beagles. I think I'm going to cry myself to sleep tonight.
