The Awful German Language: First Installment

2008.08.28
Many of my American friends have lamented about, as Mark Twain would call it, "The Awful German Language" and its words that appear to be merely a seemingly endless jumble of consonants with the occasional vowel randomly placed here and there. So, to continue to irk the non-native German speakers in my circle of acquaintances from afar, I have begun to collect photos of my favorite signage(s) here...

This is one from my recent vacation. It's located at the Stocksee: "Nichtschwimmergrenze"= non-swimmer boundary aka "the deep end".

Hamburg: "Personenaufzug" = Lift (BE), Elevator (AE)

This is a nice one from Hamburg, as it contains several. However, I'll just highlight my favorites:

"Freizonengrenze" = 'free zone boundary' aka "toll road" or "this is where you pay"

"Zweibrückenstrasse" = Two Bridge Street (that's the name of the street)

Berlin: " Institut für Rehabilitationswissenschaften" = Institute for Rehabilitation Science

Dresden: "Löschwassereinspeisung" = hydrant

And, finally, my absolute favorite.

Lübeck: "Hundekotentsorgungsbeutel"= dog waste bag (with pictured instructions!)
