While the riverside forest after which the city of Dresden was named is long gone, a beautiful river that's allowed to run its course through the city remains. The following photos are of a weekend excursion my beau and I made to visit his cousin in June...

Looking out over the city from the Hausmannsturm, it's hard to believe that from February 13th to the 15th, 1945, nearly 60% of the city was destroyed by Allied bombs.

Even the castle, over whose courtyard this dome is being built, once displayed a gapping hole from the bomb attack. It was debated whether the castle should be completely restored, as the damage serves as a reminder of the night of bombings which killed more than 35,000 city residents.

This is a section of the "Zwinger", which was erected by August the Strong next to the Dresdner castle to serve as an elaborate party, exotic plant exhibition and art exhibition hall. Much of it had to be restored after the WWII bombings as well, and today hosts several museum exhibitions and theatrical productions.

The most informative portion of our visit was the Velotaxi tour given to us by our very enthusiastic guide, Ferdinand - stonemason and architecture student at the University of Dresden.

This mosaic is a chronological parade of all the prominant (male) royalty of Dresden. It is made entirely from Maißner porcelain. Maißner porcelain, was the first porcelain to be invented/produced in Europe. Before August the Strong (forcefully) commissioned alchemist Johann Böttger to develop a recipe for making porcelain, the only porcelain to be purchased came from China - very expensive good, even for a king.

Here he is, the infamous August the Strong. His horse is the only horse on the entire porcelain mural whose gender is cleary identifiable and the steed is shown as trampling a rose. Why? Because it is said that August the Strong broke many hearts and fathered over 350 illegitimate children.

The Frauenkirche of Dresden. It survived the bombings of 1945 - the dome shape made it resistant to, earlier, canon ball attacks, and later, bombs from the air. However, the church was not fire-resistant and collapsed completely on the morning of February 15th, 1945. It lay ruined until 1994 when the church began to be painstakingly rebuilt - stone by stone. The plaza around the church was filled with shelves full of numbered stones until restorations were completed in 2004.

Before damaged parts of the city can be rebuilt, or rather, before anything new can be built on the ground where completely destroyed buildings once lay, the old basement foundations have to be removed as well. Large lots throughout Dresden look like this one.

In Germany, it is illegal to purchase marijuana - to purchase, not to possess. But, to possess it, you must purchase it. Right? Tricksy lawses! Other laws concerning the possession and consumption of this five-prong leafed plant vary from state to state. However, selling toaking accessories is completely legal in every state.
