The Lacaille 8760 Affair:: Day 62

2008.03.21

There is magic in the details.

These pages are WILD.

A book cover. Incredible.

Theme of the Week:: Old - March 29, 2008

Even when these books decay, they shed one beautiful layer to reveal a hidden other.

"Law Library of Los Angeles County" why they would stamp the front of a leather bound book is beyond me...but the effect was cool heh

Inside cover.

Crisp pages, gold-leafed edges and wild cover art.

wow.

It's hard to tell if that spotted one is purposeful or moldy with old age...

I hope you aren't all bored silly with this set. I visted the Delta Room at the Law Library yesterday morning. My boss wanted me to add some photos to our staff intranet so it was a good excuse to go spend some time in there.

The Delta Room houses the library's rare and "old" book collection. These are clearly not available for circulation, but can be requested for in library use. I wouldn't be surprised if you were also accompanied by an armed guard and forced to wear latex gloves. Lucky for me, I had the key to the room and la-te-da'ed around in there for about half an hour.

I absolutely LOVE the smell of old books and the coolness of the slightly cooler than "room temperature" atmosphere. I'd like to have my office in there.

I know that these may look a little redundant, but I really could not get enough.

In other news, the saga of my crappy lappy continues, as today it barely wanted to turn on at all. I backed up all of my important files onto Nick's external hard drive, and one of us will probably end up on the phone with tech support for about 6 hours tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, it's cleaning day in preparation for the fam arrival on Sunday. I'm so excited that even cleaning won't dampen my spirits!

Hope everyone is well and enjoys the weekend!!

Cheers.

Peche I've got one word: JEALOUS.
WOW!!!
I want to go into that room and just take in the smell and feel of all those old, gorgeous books.
Such history in the hands that have held them, the people that have absorbed and learnt from them.
Wonderful, wondeful set Bree, can't wait to see more of this intricate campus you have. And what a great part of your job to have to take some pictures in there! :)
Hope you have a fantastic time with the fam on Sunday :)

ambersunsets Oh my! What a once in a lifetime opportunity! And they just handed you the key;o) I've been known to sniff books in old bookstores. I think there should be on "old book" air freshener. This set rocks! I am adding #8 to my favorites!
Now turn on your favorite tunes and have fun spic-n-spanning!

Not bored at all. The shots are great. They have such warmth and texture. Fantastic, my friend.

veganess Wow, what treasures. The oldest book I have is "Physiological Basis of Medical Practice" published in 1937. It's fun to read what was practiced in those days. My daughter's husband's grandmother gave her girls some children's books, and I think they are dated either late 1800's or very early 1900's. Those are priceless.

Emma A lovely set and a great story of how you got to shoot them.

I love old books too; it's not just about the story inside, it's the story of all those years of use by so many people and what that book meant to them.
