In my workplace (break-chess)

2008.01.21
Usually on a break...

... I play chess (not very good ;) )...

...with a very good...

...very mysterious man ... ;)

That's my opponent :) ...

...thinking...

...and winning... checkmate again :( ... but hey, there's always tomorrow :))))

Well... that's my hour long break at work :)

JuliaGotz I have a bias towards this type of photography - people involved in something, pictures that are personal and also artistic - that show life the way you live it and see it. The hand drawn chess board makes a phenomenal foreground. I love it. And the background of your workplace - this adds so much as well - the context of the game and this way of enjoying a break from work.

Obviously, you have a lighting challenge here - lots of tones and range, but very little light falling on the face of your opponent. Picture 4 is a photo I really love, and there is a nice edge of light touching one of his cheeks. his hand is very well lit and in focus. I like the depth of field. All in all, I love it, and it does suffer from his face being so much in darkness. I could see a couple of possibilities. One is you risk disturbing the moment by bringing a white sheet of paper or something shiny to reflect a little light onto his face. another is that you work with the image just a little in photoshop. make a second layer that is a copy of the first layer. adjust levels so that his face is lighter. Select just that area, and delete the rest of the lightened layer. Make sure the edges are blended and reflatten the image. If you shoot in raw, do this in two different versions of the raw image, then bring them together. that would work best.

All in all, an excellent series.

JuliaGotz and picture 6 - you managed to get that balance of light, however you did it.
