definitely number two, the tiny amount of detail in the background draws your eye around the photo and gives it some depth, and also indicates that it is a misty day. the top photo doesn't do it for me, and i find that having that one white bar in the distance was distracting because i couldn't tell what it was and it wasn't adding anything to the overall scene.

#1 - It leaves no hint of light. It would just be a picture of the black if it wasn't for the bird. Good picture.

Beautiful picture... very mysterious!! Me, i prefer the fisrt, but that's right, both are nice!!

after enlarging both Id have to say I prefer 2......oh wait.....*enlarges again*...maybe 1...lol...I like the fact that 1 just has the tiniest hint of light. It makes the bird's silhouette much sharper and better contrasted. And of course the over all feel is much darker which suites your words better. Also Im not distracted by the background in 1.
