Stepping stones

2008.04.12

In 1988, I took my first step to sobriety.

It was a difficult journey. Life's troubles wanted to keep me down and in bondage to my old self.

Then one day, I caught a glimpse of a new horizon, I was elated! Encouraged, I took another step.

It was a slow process.

As I persevered, I could see more of what my new life held for me.

After much endurance I came to a plateau, it helped me to see the path I was on.

Although it was rough, and I stumbled, I felt the hand of God pick me up each time.

There were occasions when I found myself looking back, and I was tempted to just visit my old home, however, at the same time I could see how far I had come. When I was weak, I relied solely on my faith in Christ. He had set me on this course, and I believed he would see me through.

I continued on, even when it seemed endless.

Finally, I came to a place of rest.

It looked pleasant enough, but in order to get to it, I had to climb more steps.

The shelter became comfortable. So, I stayed awhile, a long while.

Comfort and luxury can be dangerous too, because they can breed laziness and a false sense of security.

Eventually, the day came when God moved me out of my comfort zone, and sent me on another journey.

This time I can see the lights he has set before me, they are there when I need them.

Some are little, while others are big. God knows what I will need, before I need them. He has ordained my steps.

I still use those stepping stones that were laid out for me, because I have found that anything outside of this path is uncertain, and dangerous. I resist the things that are out there- they beg me to come and taste of their beauty. After all my failures, I am wiser to them now. I have learned that their personalities are as diverse as Dr. Jekyll's and Mr. Hyde's.

There is a saying that people never change, but I know this to be a falacy because of my own personal change. I think it must comfort people to believe this statement. Maybe it is a way of letting them off the hook, so they do not have to walk along with another as they cut through a tough terrain in life. Whatever the motivation is behind this lie, I am living proof that it is not a truth. I have changed for the better over the past 19 years, while others have changed for the worse. We can all testify to that, because we have seen sweet people turn bitter.

Now I live for the others.....I believe that my invested effort to help another escape from their personal pit, is worth any cost on my part.

I have hope where there was despair, and faith where there was fear. I believe there is one who is able to see us through to the end of life's journey, even when we have been faithful at failing.
