TRANSLATIONS! TRANSLATIONS! TRANSLATIONS!

Only last Sunday, while browsing through the BLOG of this Photoblog (something, I realise now, that I should do more often), did I become aware that the translations into portuguese (Portugal) and portuguese (Brasil) were still missing! These concern the texts and words that will appear in the NEW UPGRADED VERSION of our photoblog.

I felt ashamed! ... and, instead of wondering why there ever was a BABEL TOWER?... or why ESPERANTO didn't do its job as an UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE?... I decided to take the HANDS ON APPROACH!

I volunteered and was accepted:

- In the Portugal translation page I finished the job (we are talking about a document with 518 items to translate! Some of those items have one or two words... but others have long sentences)! Before I got there, there were about 20% of those items translated, but the best contributor was brasilian (and so he was in the wrong page) and his translation efforts had to be edited! :(

- In the Brasil translation page there were about 15% of the items done; I did less than 10% more because I didn't want to commit the mistake that I mentioned above. So what I could do in this second case was to contact all the brasilian bloggers I knew and urge them to go there and help finish the job. This was done within the messaging system of Photoblog and also by e-mail.

So these latest days I've been dealing with words like "entries"and "tags", or sentences like "you are allowed to post one entry for each day, and up to 20 photographs per entry". Remember these? :)

Another famous word within our blog pages is, of course, PROFILE (meaning, in this instance, the information available about one particular blog member).

So I thought that - to celebrate this "translation" period of my life - I should remember that "profile" has a previous meaning that you can see above in today's photo! :)

miclaud I thought the portugese language was the same in Portugal and Brasil. I can speak portugese a little, that I learned by hearing brasilian music ...
miclaud · 2007-06-07: 20:58
Cabecilha Miclaud:
you are absolutely right! It's just one language. But it's a bit like english and then... american english!
This is probably a special treat by the photoblog team for our cross atlantic communities. The differences are in words (besides the obvious different accents) and if in Portugal we are used to the brasilian expressions because we get so many of their "SOAP OPERAS" on TV :) in Brasil they find it more difficult understanding us :(
Then we have the african countries that speak portuguese, like Angola, Moçambique, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, São Tomé e Principe... then we have East-Timor... and the portuguese communities of Macau, Goa, South Africa, Venezuela, Canada and the U. S. and many other places where the portuguese gathered and live.
But Brasil is big and so they have their special treat! :))
I just wish they go back to their translation page and finish it!!

stormfish hehe... welcome to the club of translators! thanks for your post and the impressions you had... i did the german translations, and BOY did i have the same trouble or not!!

i can imagine that portughese is even more difficult, because you have all these competing language dialects that claim to be the right one... and you don't want to upset brazilians, do you? ;-)

i only had to fight for one issue in particular... the german "du" or "sie" (formal or informal addressing).

well, let's hope at the end that we'll all get rich and famous with photoblog... and that the women will fly into our arms! ;-)

stormfish p.s. (more to this picture):

stormfish · 2007-06-08: 08:45
Cabecilha and I have been careful not to mention the WIKI issue.......
Cabecilha · 2007-06-08: 13:59
RozariaSBanned MademoiselleE, that's great!!!

All of a sudden all the translators are coming out of their hidding places!? It's not such a shameful job! And this here is becoming too intelectual for me... bye now:)
RozariaSBanned · 2007-06-08: 17:01
Cabecilha MademoiselleE!!
I think Rozária is right... there was no need for you to hide your moonlighting job as a translator from the rest of the world. You should talk about it, or you will feel bad!!!
That's what I did: I spilled my guts.. and then Herr eidea came along and he also agreed on the trauma he was enduring before telling the world about it!!!
We know it's not that glamorous... but someone has to do it ... or this hole site will disappear!!!

So: let's all shout together now:

TRANSLATORS RULE, YEAH!!!!
Cabecilha · 2007-06-08: 18:03
Nomenomen thank you:)

photopoet Thank you to all the translators— you all do a fantastic job demystifying the Tower of Babel. I love the profile.
photopoet · 2007-06-08: 20:16

emmetan · 2007-06-09: 08:34

mikezupan · 2007-06-11: 15:08
scientik I like this... very
scientik · 2007-06-11: 17:05
Sevendipity Beautiful but sad.
Translators are unsung heros. Our pictures often speak for themselves but the titles must be a nightmare to translate, especially British English tongue in cheek ones!
Sevendipity · 2007-06-11: 19:03
????? Nice shot. Subtle.
????? · 2007-06-12: 04:20
