Sunday Rumble

2008.08.03

now i know where they get the phrase "a dog-eat-dog world"

this morning i was woken up at around 7:30am by a loud sound. as i was drifting off of sleep, i found out it was somebody yelling. since it was sunday, my first thought was that either dad or elias was waking me up to get ready because it must be really late for church.
as i turned on my lights in a lumbering motion, i could realize that the yells were coming from outside. since my room is nearest to the neighbor's yard, i concluded it was noise from their side and none of my business (which largely meant i wasn't being forced to wake up).
i went back to sleep.

i woke up at around 8:40am when i began to hear bits and pieces of an interesting story. then again, who can miss out on a piece of juicy-sounding info? i slowly woke up and then heard enough of a sentence to perk my ears.
"they're both dead now"
as i moved towards mom and dad's room to hear the rest of this story, i came to find out what a tragic morning it had been.

Two pitbull dogs on the loose made it into our yard in the morning. Why they arrived we have no idea. We don't even know why they decided to gang up and try to kill our dog, Chorizo.

These pitbull dogs were no ordinary pure-breed. They were fighting dogs, with scars, power, and blood-thirst to prove it.

As for OUR dog, Chorizo, he's a mix dog... a little ol' offspring of some of our last dogs. He's a kind dog. A large, kind dog. The kind of dog that is so large and kind that he's really dumb sometimes and really peppy and giddy. but he's also large and kind and dumb and giddy enough to be chained to the tree we have in the backyard because that Chorizo will cruise the streets and play hard to get when it comes to bringing him back into the yard (which means chasing him down and dragging him back).

I don't know what was up with that pitbull couple (they were a male and female) but they came at him and poor, kind, CHAINED UP Chorizo didn't have much of a chance against them.
Our neighbor was the first to notice those vicious dogs (he's always got our back).
He was the one yelling at our house, advising us that these 2 fighting dogs are in our backyard killing our dog.
My dad jolted from his room and went outside to scan the situation. To run and flog 2 fighting pitbull dogs from behind would not be a wise move at all.
My dad felt powerless! Chorizo was yelping and crying and those 2 dogs weren't in any mood to stop until their job was done.
He picked up the phone and alerted the sheriff. the sheriff couldn't say more than "you are allowed to shoot those dogs and defend your dog." we don't own a gun. we don't have any weapons or anything! The sheriff said he would still come by to fill a report but he couldn't do more than that.

A rope came in handy.

Our neighbor and my dad lassoed at the dogs from the opposite side of the fence. First they caught the female. She was already tired out and probably injured. The male was not so weak. He put up a fight and we finally pried him away from our defenseless Chorizo.
With Chorizo's last strength, he moved far away from the dog's bodies and fell under a tree to rest.

He's not eating, but he is getting plenty of water and managed to move himself to the doghouse in front of our back porch. He's really injured and will probably be moving as little as possible.
That's the sad part. Whenever we approach him, he will get up to greet us, but he barely has the strength to hold himself up.

That was the Sunday Rumble.

remember chorizo: he's so lively here
