Up for Origami?

2008.12.07
pixel
start with a square
pixel
add a crease from corner to corner twice to make an "X"
the paper will be lifted up like this but i need for you go turn it upside-down so that the paper will be hitting down (it's for the next step)
pixel
(upper left): now add a crease that runs down half of the paper
(lower right): now turn it over so that it is inwards
pixel
fold IN on the crease that runs down the half but make sure the other creases move OUT

the final result should be a triangle with 4 flaps
pixel
turn it over so the triangle is pointing you
pixel
lift one of the flaps (i'm lifting the right one) and fold it to the other side so you can crease a nice line down the half of the triangle
pixel
lift that flap that you just moved and point it upwards... now try to keep up
pixel
by slowly pushing the crease of the end of the flap, it starts to open up
we will be flattening this flap, but there's one thing you need to make sure of

before you fold completely, if you hold the paper so you can see above it, you should line the original crease of the side to the joints in the middle (like the upper-right of the picture below):
pixel
now that you are sure, still be careful to fold down the creases cleanly (sometimes things get a little crooked coming down to the point)
pixel
there, nice and flat.

now, take a look and estimate the horizontal center of that polygon you just made:
pixel
once you find it, the trick is all you're doing is touching the top point of the polygon with the bottom point:
pixel
once you're sure the tips are matched, you'll have to make the crease, but only crease by pressing the inside fold (it's getting harder to explain this...) well, if you don't understand that part... just wait to make the crease by trying to follow along the next steps...
pixel
you'll need to flatten that weird flap that is lifting the opened side of the triangle, so put your fingers on the inside to invert the twisted paper -- be careful, this part you can tear if you're too impatient

it should look something like this:
pixel
now push the inside of the next inverted flap and do the same

together, they should look like this:
pixel
hooray! if you've kept up so far, i'm not so bad at explaining origami, and if it's too hard, you're better off reading a pro's description of this Lily Flower origami (easily found anywhere on the internet).
pixel
now, get that new flap and lift it up:
pixel
next, you're going to get one of the sides to fold into the center creased line....

follow carefully now:
pixel
imagine the side of the polygon is a line. now you have to make the side line touch the center line of the polygon.

maybe this will help:
pixel
follow through to the center line:
pixel
now crease it! crease it good!
and repeat.
pixel
how about now? you got it this far?
Well congrats! that's most all you need to know! The rest is repetition.
pixel
All you need now is to get the next flap and repeat the process from pic #11
do this to the remaining flaps.

When you have, it should look like this:
pixel
The next part is the easy part.
pixel
get the flaps from the top and fold them down far as you can, which will be right about where this picture above is hitting.

when you're ready, crease!
pixel
do you see it? do you see what it's becoming?

well, repeat the folding down process on the rest of the flaps.
pixel
looks like this!

now applaud yourself for getting this far and getting a really nice Lily flower:
pixel
but what's that? you don't want to stop there?

well, there's a little detail you may decide to add:
pixel
curl the end of the flower by wrapping it around a pencil or using your own mad skillz
pixel
add to your collection! ;D
pixel
And have your sleepy friends model it.
(thanks, Yvonne!)

In the 6th grade, i had this origami craze. I read the origami books, i was ALWAYS folding paper cranes and i was memorizing new animals to fold. You bet i was going into the websites and trying the next origami flower.
Then it was over.

But you know, I still know 2 origami fold by memory. The crane and that lily flower. The one that's the most impressing is the flower, so if you want to go out there and impress somebody, now's your chance.
Enjoy!
