Sovereign Hill

2008.10.11
On Saturday Genevieve packed a lunch and we drove to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. This place is a working re-creation of an 1860s mining town, complete with locals in period costume tending the shops, working the equipment, driving horses and talking to visitors.

Through the window of "Brown and Co. Confectionery" We watched a man making candy. There was a speaker system (one of the few things there NOT from the mid 1860s) and he explained what he was doing as he went.

The outside of "Brown and Co. Confectionery"

This man melts down gold!
He poured some liquid gold into a mould, doused it in cold water then asked for a few volunteers to hold it.

I got to hold it! Yes it was very heavy. And very valuable too!

This thoughtful shop put a wee bridge over the gutter so the ladies would not have to risk their skirt hems as they walked across the road

A guide took us underground into some of the mining tunnels! some parts of the tunnels has been dug out for tours. Other parts were the original tunnels dug well over a hundred years ago!

This man gave a rifle demonstration, he also explained that it was often hard to find people willing to be law-enforcers as they all wanted to be gold-hunters. To solve the problem prisoners in nearby towns were offered pardon if they agreed to work for the law.
Strange but true.

Millinery Store!

Dresses, frocks and gowns. I LOVED seeing all the early Victorian clothing!
