Dressmaking rates and Origane-fashion

2007.06.01

Being recently registered self employed, and having had a lot of inner discussions about the fairness and unfairness of charging people who want to have dresses made, and looking around at the market, the competition (if any) noticing that most seamstresses, whether they are profesionnal or not, charge a lot of money for having any work done, and having more discussions with my accountant, friends, boyfriend,etc......

I have now decided as for Origane-fashion and the dressmaking, that I will charge every friend, myspace friend or aquintance who wishes to have a garment made, £60. (As a minimum; period dresses or complicated garments like artistic suits will require more as they are bloody complicated and time consumming) .

I have done in the past a lot of free work, or work which has not been paid for, or work which was not paid enough (as in, I asked the person for £10 because I am just so low confident and the garment is not perfect and that person actually gave me £10 even though the garment is very good--really, they could have insisted on giving me more! Come on!) and yeah, those times have come where I want now recognition for my work, and love will not make me live.(Even though love was all I wanted for a while)

Because I do not want to work too much regarding the dressmaking, this price will now deter most people, which is unfortunate, and may make them feel I have became hard, but will make the other people confident that they can ask me for something, if they are ready to pay for it, and be sure that I won't be reluctant or embarassed and all the emotional saga which came with doing work for free-or not much.

So yes...Now....Ask me! And I will(probably) say yes!

Hello and all the best to all!

Claude

ShangriLa I think you've got it all wrong Claude. You should be charging a fee based on how many hours you work and the cost of materials and overheads. You should find out what is the industry standard for someone with your qualifications and experience and base your hourly rate on that.

A flat rate for a variety of different garments makes no sense. If you don't want to make any more work, just say you don't want to do it anymore. That's the most honest thing.
