Hmm, looks to be a textured, checkered, pattern in the central oval - the dots remind me of a piece of punch-work so could it be a paper rubbing or pressing of a panel? Then again, it's hard to tell from the small picture, it could be a fancy fabric, maybe a table-cloth or napkin. Heck, these days they are doing such fancy things on rolls of kitchen towel it could even be a sheet of kitchen towel.
