The gatehouse. Or wayside church. Either way, I thought it a gorgeous entry statement.

Today's Scottish Stunt involved getting peeved about the $50 Sterling Winery wanted for the 2.5 minute gondola ride up the hill to their wine-tasting room. We got around this by finding another winery at the top of another hill -- and so we discovered the Castello de Amorosa. The view from the car park is higher than the Sterling winery, so the boys enjoyed standing above them and shouting insults to the horizon.
The Castello de Amorosa (Castle of Love) in the Napa Valley is an incredible feat of architecture, and totally worth taking the tour. The owner, D Sattui, took 14 years to build this labour of love, importing 180 sea containers of 11th-13th Century bricks and masonry and building materials. It is four storeys below ground and four storeys above, and has been built to be an authentic 11-13th Century Tuscany-style castle.
Gob-smacking to say the least, particularly the REAL torture equipment that we found in the torture chamber, and the awesome acoustics in the Knight's Hall -- no secrets in this room!
Today I am thankful I didn't live in the 11th-13th Century!!!!
