March 18 - 22: Bedding down - the garden and the season

2009.03.18
March 18: It took me 18 months to transform my garden from a dusty, scraggly, slippery sand-dune into a terraced, water-wise area where plants should have been happy to grow. However, it took me another five years to do what we did today - mulch it extensively to add some yumminess to the bed. As I was going through my end-of-gardening-day ritual of hand watering the garden and assessing my efforts, one regret kept churning over and over in my head: I wish I'd done this five years ago! The garden today would be markedly healthier and robust, and I wouldn't be feeling so sore and exhausted ;-)

March 19: I've been meaning to organise a bike and seat for the Little Star and me ever since she could sit up. We got as far as borrowing one to see if this leisure pursuit is for us. Judging by the beams on her face as we glided around the yard, yes, we must get a bike.

March 20: The sight of the Little Star trying to climb up the deck wires today scared the hell out of me. a) because I never thought I'd see the day where *my* toddler would be scaling these wires; and b) because I never thought I'd see the day where I'd have a toddler again!

March 21: Celebrated autumn equinox back in Perth with an al fresco feast a-la the Gavstar. The neighbours joined us for an easy evening acknowledging the wonderful summer, musing over the fate of daylight savings in W.A., and easing into the shorter days ahead.

March 22: There was a "Save the Faeries" day at the City Farm organic markets today, so dragged the boys along to share the faery-liscious fun. As much as they hated to admit, there were moments of intrigue during the outing for them... such as discovering the naked neck chickens (yes, they're really called that, and they really do have naked necks).

The massive task of frontyard-blitzing the house continued this week, with a day trip to Bunbury that turned into a 3-day stint. I didn't mind though... giving so much love and mulch to the garden, particularly at this time of year (autumn equinox), gave me a yummy feeling that I was helping the garden bed down for the winter. Therein lies analogies for myself too... the autumn equinox is my trigger to prepare for the colder, shorter days ahead. Hmmmm, time to start planning that road trip from Brisbane to Sydney that I've been thinking about for July...
