April 17 - 21: Backyard Blitz

2009.04.17
April 17: Today I built the north-facing garden bed with nothing but sweat, grit and a long-handled shovel. It was somewhat therapeutic to take "mummy's sippy cup" and water the newly transplanted rosemary under the light of the waning moon.

April 18: The Little Star loves being outside so much she couldn't even sit still for a photo. I should have guessed by her wild hair (from birth) that she was always going to be an outdoors girl. She was a good girl this evening for her aunty while Gavstar and I went out for the annual golf dinner, but rumour has it she took a little step while we were gone. Of course I refuse to believe it....

April 19: The great thing about doing an honest day's physical labour is that the night's sleep is deep and easy. I slept so well I woke at dawn feeling fantastic. Caught the sunrise too which was pretty special for a night-owl like me!

April 20: Noticed this incredible smoky haze on the horizon and thought the neighbour was on fire. After a phone call to check, turns out his manager was back-burning. Made for a spectacular sky though.

April 21: It's Gavstar's last day as a 40-something year old. We spent it working hard as usual, taking a bit of time out to take a run to Dunsborough to check on a job there.

-----------------

In Gavstar's final week as a 40-something, we both worked flat out all week getting the garden ready for his party on Sunday. The timing was perfect - the day I got my book to the publisher, it was crunch time. The Little Star climbed the full flight of steps for the first time within minutes of me pressing "send", and began eating flies not long after. My guess is, that's it for my career as an author for a few years now. Oh well, onto other pursuits that mean I can enjoy watching my little girl grow up.

Once my book had been sent, I spent most of my time outdoors which meant having the baby outside with me. Turns out she's not the little princess I was anticipating but a wild child to the 100 percent and beyond. She happily spent hours at a time crawling around the deck, trying to hammer nails into the deck with her bare hands, taking a few topples off the edge of the deck, and fighting for her turn to plant the new bushes into the new garden beds.
