June 18 - 22: Opposite spectrums
2009.06.18
June 18: This beautiful service was beside the Pentecost River in the Kimberleys - the location where Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman kissed for the first time in the movie "Australia". More than that, I'll remember it forever as the place Justine and Steve exchange very beautiful and symbolic vows.

June 19: (excerpt from my article about the Kimberleys): "The river crossing is only open for a few months of the year. The rest of the time it is flooded during the monsoonal wet season, effectively isolating the inhabitants on the west side for the summer months and beyond. The shoreline is dotted with the ubiquitous grey nomads who are prevalent throughout the Kimberley at this time of year. They are retired couples, spending their kids' inheritance, and who have ample time to decide whether crossing the river is worth dirtying their shiny new 4WDs for. We have no such luxury. If we don't cross the river, we'll miss our flight home."

June 20: For two years we struggled to get our house plans through council approval due to a dispute about shadows... the council said our new house would over-shadow the neighbour by too much, but by our calculations we met the guidelines. The rule of thumb, apparently, was according to the shadow at midday at winter solstice. The point where Gavstar's tape measure is touching the ground is where 1m of shadow was cast at midday today.

June 21: Boy Wonderful left for England late last night for his school trip. Woke up feeling impressed by the teacher's idea to give them all numbers and have them all call out in sequence to ensure no-one is missing.

June 22: These are the colours we are waking up to at the farm each morning. Exquisite.

Had a fabulous five days in the Kimberley, only to arrive home to the winter solstice in Perth and close to five degree temps at the farm... We effectively went from summer in the north of the country to winter in the south, and travelled from one extreme of isolated country to another. What a beautiful parallel for celebrating the solstice.
