Today, in the garden

2007.08.03
This is another anthill that's appeared on the back verandah. This anthill is built on cement, about 5mm underneath it. The ants drag the soil onto the concrete, and come up through the dirt they put there. Weird.

The garden looks very grey at this time of year (winter here in Australia). You can see some of the driveway which is lined with mosses.

This kangaroo was probably hit by a car, and limped off into the garden to die one night. Other native animals have had a few meals...

the moss grows until the grass takes over in a few weeks.

This moss is growing on an old sleeper. It's tiny stuff, but so beautiful.

The hakeas are beginning to bloom! this variety is as prickly as all get out, but it doesn't deter the black cockatoos, who rip these bushes apart.

a little seat on the dam wall - the dam is filling again, at last!

This crazy brown snake doesn't seem to understand that snakes aren't supposed to be out and about when it's only 5 degrees C!

this pole is a bit tired... a bit too rustic! It's a little rail on the side of a bridge over a drain into the dam.

I had to trim this branch about a year ago.

the wattles are beginning to bloom!

It was freezing today. About 5 degrees max. It rained, and the sun popped out for 5 seconds every so often. Still, the wattles and hakeas have started to bloom. Daffodils are falling over, and the tulips are just starting to poke through the ground. The brown snake that lives in the barbecue came out to find a tiny bit of warmth. He was hopeful.

jet28 I love your garden. Don't the anthills mean it's going to rain? (I haven't seen any for a while!)

Daryl Well, we've been getting some rain these last few weeks. There are creeks near us that are actually flowing for the first time in two years. Yay! And the pipe that goes into our dam is reaching the water again - just! If it keeps raining a bit longer, the garden might get some water this coming summer, which it didn't last year. I'll post a photo of the dam soon. Speaking of ants... In summer, if you sit on the veranda in the morning, all the sugar ants travel from west to east , and in the evening they go east to west - sort of like the morning and afternoon commute on freeway to and from the CBD. I sometimes wonder what they're talking about as they go along. (Oh oh! I feel another story coming on!)

Lizzi love the ant hill..we're just back from our holidays and the kids noticed how tiny the ants were in Spain, compared to Scottish ants..great photos!

Daryl I hope you had a great time in Spain. Will have to check your blog now. Ants... we have them in all sizes here - from eensy weensy to HUGE with really powerful stings. We have one variety that jumps - we call them jump jacks, when we're being polite. They are very aggressive and make a European wasp sting seem insignificant.
