The Domain of Hades

2008.06.28

"The gates glimmered in front: still open. Back to the world again. Enough of this place. Brings you a bit nearer every time. Last time I was here was Mrs Sinico's funeral. Poor papa too. The love that kills. And even scraping up the earth at night with a lantern like that case I read of to get at fresh buried females or even putrefied with running gravesores. Give you the creeps after a bit. I will appear to you after death. You will see my ghost after death. My ghost will haunt you after death. There is another world after death named hell. I do not like that other world she wrote. No more do I. Plenty to see and hear and feel yet. Feel live warm beings near you. Let them sleep in their maggoty beds. They are not going to get me this innings. Warm beds: warm fullblooded life."

James Joyce (Ulysses)

Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin, Ireland.

This song by Death Cab for Cutie reminds me of that day.

DancingDolphin Well done! I usually tend to romanticize cemeteries (which I love wandering) .... this speaks to me of the death.

makaid I added the 3rd one to my favorites I love your focus. Also I like the last one. I think the way you composed the shot tells a story nicely.

gderuiter The light-filled airy bodies of the dandelion puff-balls in #1 rise up like spirits out of the graves. And the Joyce quote is perfect. The first three photos are amazing together -- probably apart from the last one for me because they seem more of the same era, while the 4th seems like a newer grave site. I do appreciate the broken-headed Madonna, though -- and is the word behind her "BELIEVE"? Probably not -- but it's what came to my mind.

gderuiter Dragana, you inspired my most recent post! Motif

oldbabe This looks like one of the better kept cemeteries in Ireland. I remember visiting there in 1998 and a lot of the cemeteries I went to visit that probably held my ancestors were overrun with sheep and broken stones and thigh high grass.

StonedNori I love so much cemeteries... They are so quiet places, you're alone and not at the same time... It's a fantastic feeling !
Great shots ! :)

marcinescu #1 is verry good i like the meaning of this flowers, (i don''t now their name in english) they are like souls on the wind, perfect contrast with the graves
marcinescu · 2008-07-03: 06:02
stormfish oh no, james joyce again. *sigh*

for some reason, i like the madonna with the broken head. that little engraved birdie on the tombstone behind her is like the soul escaping from the gap... marvelous shot, and should be standing in this blog entry alone.
