Where Angels Thread

2008.07.01

These photographs were taken in the Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin, Ireland. It is a part of the cemetery where very young children are buried in the shared plots. The first time I went there, the wind suddenly blew and all the little bells and windmills started turning and jingling, producing this wonderful sound that was one of a greeting. The love of the parents left behind is palpable.

mojaroo this is the reality..... nice post

DancingDolphin Very sad area. I think loosing a young child would be very difficult to recover from. Hopefully this place and having somewhere to grieve and leave toys helps their families heal. Good post.

jenjung i took a class in college where one of the grad students had written a book about how people decorate gravesites - these photos remind me of her work.

caroleagle this is amazing and these pictures make me feel sick and dizzy. My man is oblivious looked but didn't see.

gderuiter Now it's my turn for projection. Our photos feel subliminally in dialogue: first the dandelions linked the graveyard to my thoughts of my son, and now these photos link them back to it again. I can think of nothing that could make me grieve more than losing my child. (I love your post.)
gderuiter · 2008-07-01: 17:16
oldbabe I can't imagine losing a child.
These graves are very interesting.
oldbabe · 2008-07-01: 17:59
focussed heartbreaking, interesting, and beautifully shot. 3 and 4 are haunting and contradicting. Toys obviously placed their out of love and grief now seem to lie in what looks like abandonment.
Nicely done Dragana.

declancorrigan Was looking fwd to this post having spoken to you about it. a great jumble of bits and pieces reflecting the minds of parents and how they must feel, wanting to connect with a child that's gone, bringing toys..... Also love the first one innocence overlooking the innocent! A fascinating and sad place.
declancorrigan · 2008-07-01: 19:42
makaid Amazing. I love the color ones. There is something akin to a duality of happiness and grief in the first few. The toys were used to make the child happy but they are ina tragic place. I love 3. The toys strewn all over gives a sense of disorder and unfairness. Also the smiles on all of the toys is haunting. Great shots.
