Season Of The Shark (Day I)

2008.07.09
Friends, Keem Bay, Achill Island

Michal

Jay

AnnMarie

So, last weekend my photographer friends Jay (http://www.jaybedwani.com), Michal (http://www.michaliwanowski.com), Gina (http://www.ginabrockerphotography.com/) and AnnMarie (writer/film maker) came for a weekend in the West of Ireland.

The first photograph was taken just as we were to enter water so Jay can take picture of me and AnnMarie, while Michal stood behind with the bag of feathers that he was about to throw over us (ask Jay what was that all about). Anyway just as he was about to press the shutter, he said, "Oh my God, is that a shark". Sure enough about 50m away from us, the Jaws were approaching. Now you may think that any normal persons reaction would be to swim/run for its life. Well, not us, we just watched amazed at this force of nature, gliding through the ocean until it went under and we could no longer see where was it going. Then we exited, fast. The last three portraits were taken after the event.

This made the holiday that little bit more special and gave us something to talk about to everyone interested/not interested, in the pub later on. It would have been great even if The Jaws did not take the star role, as we were together and happy and laughing, and realizing the importance of friendship and warmth and companionship between all of us. As Yo La Tengo says: "Please don’t be afraid / No matter how much out there scares you so / Scares you so / Just look around / If it’s not me then someone else you know / And I don’t belong at all / Ignore the shadows on the wall / They don’t mean a thing / Could it be that it’s the season / I believe that it’s the season
of the shark."

P.S. Notice how we photographers are not that big on smiling for the camera.

jagungal I bet you weren't all this serious in the pub! Good portraits and a great place — but it looks cold!
jagungal · 2008-07-10: 06:28
DancingDolphin I really like the first shot! Such a contrasting tension going on with the fact that the three of you are standing there posing for a shot, looking straight at the camera, and yet not smiling!

makaid I love the stark looks on their faces. The last one of Ann Marie is wonderful. It is almost like the experience of the shark is still lingering.

P.s. Nowadays smiling has become a defense mechanism anyway.

Great set.
