Never comfortable with politics or authority, the day I got my red party book and swore to be a good Yugoslav. There is a song by Yugoslav band Idoli that sums up the spirit of the times pretty well.

Very wonderful pictures here. I like the fact that you knew from the begining that you wanted to be a photographer. Not many people know what they want from such an early age. Those missing years though... How were the pictures burnt? I hope you didn't have to exprerience to much of the war. I also wish your brother a safe return from Iraq.

Your photos are priceless! When I was a teen, I was cleaning out the garage and left two steamer trunks full of priceless family photos outside where I forgot them for 2 days. It rained and ruined them. That's how I am responsible for my family's "missing years".

Haven't there been lots of wars in Yugoslavia? My husband's family emigrated to US from there. His grandparents were born in Hungary, they emigrated from Yugoslavia and spoke several languages. And now it is Serbia Montenegro. They have no pictures either. They were from Antalfalva, Vojvodina. I have missing years too - lots of them. We were too poor to have a camera so only photos got taken when we visited my maternal grandmother which was a rare occurence and even rarer after my parents divorced. Grandma had a camera. Thanks for sharing your photos and story. I enjoyed examining everything in the photos. And you are cute young thing.

Always loved those old B/W-s no matter who was in the picture. Get's me melancholic, close to sadness, but still loved them. And thank you for the Morning Jacket, never heard them, found another band I like!
