Dragana and The Missing Years

2008.07.27
2 years old

Feeding chickens with my mum

Walking down the Lungo Mare with my aunts and mum

Me and mum, throwing a tantrum

4 years of age, dad, brother and me. My dad put the first camera into my hands as soon i was able to hold it.

I am the one with the book, always a nerd

Pissing from the hight or looking for something? In the front of grandfathers house in Bosnia

Toilet training in "Doni Osmond" t-shirt

My favorite person in the universe, my grandmother and me, looking at the photographs

5 years old

Throwing a tantrum again

Doing what I do the best

6 years old

Never comfortable with politics or authority, the day I got my red party book and swore to be a good Yugoslav. There is a song by Yugoslav band Idoli that sums up the spirit of the times pretty well.

21st birthday party on the beach on the island of Krk with Ivana, Vedrana and Brki

Cleaning Vedrana's neck

22 years old

I was suppose to write my dissertation here, it was too hot.

In the swamp, Donji Miholjac

The love affair

Snorkeling in the salty, beautiful Adriatic Sea. Every time I go there in recent years I listen to 'Golden' by My Morning Jacket, obsesively, over and over again for some reason. Have a listen.

From the age of 2 to 22.

These are some of the rare photographs I have of my childhood, courtesy of the war in former Yugoslavia in the early 90s. And then some photographs from my college days. The in-between is missing. Burnt.

That's how the others saw me.

DancingDolphin Wonderful shot of you with your Grandma. And I'm sorry for your missing years.
DancingDolphin · 2008-07-26: 22:08
makaid Very wonderful pictures here. I like the fact that you knew from the begining that you wanted to be a photographer. Not many people know what they want from such an early age.

Those missing years though... How were the pictures burnt?

I hope you didn't have to exprerience to much of the war. I also wish your brother a safe return from Iraq.

bchat Your photos are priceless! When I was a teen, I was cleaning out the garage and left two steamer trunks full of priceless family photos outside where I forgot them for 2 days. It rained and ruined them. That's how I am responsible for my family's "missing years".
bchat · 2008-07-27: 17:31

Priceless photos. I'm amazed at how you looked the same even at two!

Stollet may she be granted beauty and yet not
beauty to make a stranger's eye distraught,
or hers before a looking-glass, for such,
being made beautiful overmuch
consider beauty a sufficient end... (Yeats)

Your shots of Other people were so interesting.

oldbabe Haven't there been lots of wars in Yugoslavia? My husband's family emigrated to US from there. His grandparents were born in Hungary, they emigrated from Yugoslavia and spoke several languages. And now it is Serbia Montenegro. They have no pictures either. They were from Antalfalva, Vojvodina.

I have missing years too - lots of them. We were too poor to have a camera so only photos got taken when we visited my maternal grandmother which was a rare occurence and even rarer after my parents divorced. Grandma had a camera.

Thanks for sharing your photos and story. I enjoyed examining everything in the photos. And you are cute young thing.
oldbabe · 2008-07-29: 17:27
mijocus Always loved those old B/W-s no matter who was in the picture. Get's me melancholic, close to sadness, but still loved them.
And thank you for the Morning Jacket, never heard them, found another band I like!
