What Happened One Year On (On Portraiture)

2008.08.20
Vedrana's apartment, 2007,

Vedrana's apartment, 2008.

This got me thinking about the portraiture. The first picture was taken in August 2007, the second one in August 2008. The first time something bad happened, the second time nothing bad happened.

Some people who knew my subjects commented that I have an ability to catch the essence of the people I photograph. I disagree. From where I am looking, the thing caught is primarily my own reflection.

marcinescu for me this photos are great capture of time in life, the moment, you have to know the portraited people to say something about their real fealings and to be right, it can be sad or happy, what one persone is seeing is not what other would see

one i can say for shure, your photos always say something, those are difrent words for most but they are speaking

dhulsmeyer i won't hazard a guess but i remember the first photo and i like the second one as much as i do the first.

reinaldo The life is full of resistances, you have the ability to express them through your photographs, congratulations...;-)

dae88 the degree sort of depends on the intent, but a photograph is always more about the photographer than about its subject. always... such a silly girl took you so long to figure that out, you being an MFA and all

mariaps I will not try, though many things are going through my head. Just want to say that I always felt that your photos were very meaningful - to you. And in return, I personally could relate to some of them. Great work. :)

bchat Your photos are evocative and, together with the narrative, create a interesting space. It's cinematic! Thanks for combining images and words into an artful post.

DancingDolphin I think we all "see" through our own lives and that is precisely what makes photography so interesting. Your photos always show emotion... it really doesn't matter that is is not THEIR emotion.

dadlak interesting insight into first photo...thanks

stormfish i refuse to interpret this or make any assumptions about neither your first alienation nor your second.

but i would like to have these bar chairs.

jfrand i love the mood of the second shot.
it's remarkable.
is that all natural lighting?
jfrand · 2008-08-21: 09:15
Franzisko the first is very good!

TIM927 both images have a whole story in them,,,the only problem is that our imagination will lead us through wrong ways and sure we will never guess what was going on, not so easy:) But the simple fact that you make us recreate a moment in somebody´s life,,even if that moment never existed should make u feel proud of your work!!

danci Meni je ova fotka s Vedranom fenomenalna.Pretpostavljam da je pogled dobar(na more),što mi čini ovaj pro(i)zor s Vekom još neodoljivijim.

jenjung won't make any guesses since everyone will interpret them differently but I think they're both really great shots.
jenjung · 2008-08-21: 12:10
oldbabe My guess would say congratulations to you.

RozariaS only painful situations come to mind... can't share them...

Pikapol very interesting work!
both shots are very strong and unusual. I like a lot the point of view (kind of "frog perspective").
it would be very interesting to see Vedrana's apartment, 2009 (next year).
