Rebecca Miller

Rebecca Miller

A couple of months ago I was approached by an American magazine Venuszine to photograph writer / film director Rebecca Miller.

We met in the film studios cutting room. And then we went for a walk. I was having one of my confused days and was not making much sense. I asked what type of mothers do photographers make (Rebecca's mother was Inge Morath, one of the first female Magnum photographers), she laughed. "Complex", she said.

I looked up her mothers work, she had a penchant for taking portraits through windows so both the outside world and the person looking are in the picture. Reflection = reflecting. I thought about it a lot in last couple of days. I do it a lot too. Why? Is it because we are portraying ourselves by taking pictures of people looking through a glass. Simultaneously looking inward and outward. Looking for our place in the world through a looking glass. Needles to say the picture I sent to the American magazine that commissioned the portrait (I did not give them any choice, I only sent that one photograph), was of her seating in this 1970s canteen in the film studios, looking out, parking lot reflecting on her face. Luckily the magazine people liked it. Hope she will like it to. When we parted, she said: "I think my mum would have liked you, you are not a film waster, she always said that people who take too many frames don't know what are they looking for."

DancingDolphin Congratulations, what a fantastic opportunity and you did better on a "confused" day than most of us would do at our "best"! I had not heard of Inge Morath but followed your link. I really liked her photographs, will have to investigate them further. Thanks for the info.

makaid Amazing words. It takes a brilliant person to understand how to do a portrait like this. Not because of it's technical difficulty, but because of it's meaning.

It emphasizes the importance of focusing on knowing the person in front of your camera befre trying to portray them.
