The Story About Manic Depressive (Polar Bears)

2008.10.05

Prague Zoo. August 2008.

Two Polar Bears. One from Kazakhstan Zoo. Depressed. Walking Around in Circles. All day and all night long. People move quickly from his enclosure. The other doing backward loops in the pool over and over again. Equally sad but kids seem to be interested.

One Time For Me.

DancingDolphin Hey you've taken the idea of photographing "through" as well as "at" a window to another subject.... well done! (referring back to the portrait of the woman some weeks ago) You are full of good ideas.... last time I was at a zoo I was trying to AVOID getting the two images. Seems I have to go back to a zoo and rethink that!

The first one is pretty spectacular.... I feel sorry for the bears... and a really good title BTW.

DancingDolphin Went back and "favorite-d" #1... at my age I'll forget the idea before I get a chance to "steal" it! :-)

Pikapol it's very sad about the polar bears.
but I really like how you documented it.

pumacat looks like the zoo here, looks like every zoo on the world perhaps.
I hate it, lions walking in circles and big chimps sitting behind glasses with tears in their eyes. and noone cares. children knocking at the glasses and all the people are laughing, oh what a great day at the zoo.

Iwanowski No 1 and 3 remind me of 'A Zed and Two Noughts.' I've watched it recently and felt awkward, set back to the 80's, when Zoo's were depressing as hell but I didn't see that.

wfrnk Bi-polar bears. Nice idea, awesome catches... :-)

stormfish what strikes me most here is the glass window/wall between the one and the other side of reality; which you have included in your shots. i like that; it makes me think. the actual structure of what we experience... it's not the illusion of perfect harmony between us, the spectators, and them, the victims of our voyeurism... it's the only slightly visible relation IN BETWEEN.

and i don't give a fuck about the bears being depressed or sweating or shit.

leocheung Poor Polars bears behind glass.
Great shots again.

mariaps While I really like observing animals at the zoo, it is quite sad that they are in captivity. So I get mixed feelings. What I love about your set is the dual image in your shots. 6 and 7 are my favorites. :)

makaid I was just watching something about Polar Bears, they will actually swim for miles to get food and then have to fight to get it. Afterwards they swim back for miles.

I wonder what makes anyone think this is humane to trap them in an enclosure with the same square footage as a human home. It is no wonder the animal paces. The second one probably wishes he could commit suicide.

tridib gr8 post....

TheBigHush When I look at the first photo, I see an amalgam of two starkly contrasting environments. The silhouette of the ledge at the top of the picture creates the illusion of a natural ice shelf and that the bears are indeed free in the wild. My eyes then drift down towards the rigging, poles and rails in the bottom half which clearly reflect their state of captivity.

I'm not sure if you meant to achieve this deliberately but even if not, it's brilliant. It clearly encapsulates the extremely polarising aspects of zoos and if we can ever justify what we sacrifice in order to attain.

dadlak I agree with DancingDolphin's comment. I usually discard my double images...with your genius you find gold.
