The Day Martin Parr Gave Me A Dress Down

2008.11.17
Dragana and Martin Parr, sometime in 2007.

Yeah, it all started with him looking at the dummy of my book. He looked at it once, than once more and then half way through the third time he turns to me (would not be surprised that the moment in the picture was exactly that moment), and says/sniggers: "So you think you are great?", I said "Excuse me, what do you mean by that" ... than painful 30 min ensued of him dressing me down. It was educational and gave me a real kick in the arse. It was not all bad, after he watched me crumble his last sentence was "You do have a great eye".

Iwanowski oh no, you didn't say 'excuse me, what do you mean by that...', you first laughed, then turned towards the window, wiggled on your chair and without any embarrassment replied you didn't say you were great but just too intense about your photographs to be able to edit them down. I remember, I am sitting right opposite :) And yes, he loved the way your eye works. What a historic photograph! Looks like 1970's :)

dhulsmeyer the photo has an iconic appeal to it. you should be proud of yourself, that you could look at it as constructive. did you cry?
dhulsmeyer · 2008-11-15: 17:46
mariaps Yikes! I stopped breathing for a second there at the thought of it. Hopefully you got a lot out of it. It must have been interesting at best. :)

DancingDolphin Such an unusual setting for us to see you in... Mr. Parr seems to be the only comfortable person in the room.

Rogermay · 2008-11-16: 11:23
jenjung It seems that it wasn't too painful and that you did take something good from the experience! : )

Sevendipity There is a Swazi saying: "a single hand cannot wash itself". We can all learn and improve and you are on this journey. Good one. Personally I do not believe that a true teacher would ever dress down a student in front of their colleagues. Sounds more of an ego trip, but then I wasn't there and didn't hear him.
Sevendipity · 2008-11-16: 17:18
Azrin Congratulations!
Did his words hit you hard?
Azrin · 2008-11-17: 03:32

stormfish the thing with teacher is we all have to overcome them. and the thing that makes them suffer the most is that they know.
