‘The surrealist ragpicker’s acuity was directed to finding beautiful what other people found ugly or without interest and relevance – bric-a-brac, naïve or pop objects, urban debris.’
Susan Sontag (1978)

When I moved to Ireland, the amount of trash on the streets drove me mad. I turned into an old grumpy one, telling young hoodlums to pick it up after themselves. Got into the trouble couple of times on that account. When I realized that me stressing out will not make a world cleaner place, I started photographing what annoyed me.

The purpose of this project is to accumulate a sufficient number of these images that will then be placed in such a way to create a narrative, a visual poem. I am also planning together with the book to produce postcards of waste I found on the streets of the cities i visited

“The job of the poet (a job which can’t be learned)
consists of placing those objects of the world which have become invisible
due to the glue of habit, in an unusual position which strikes the soul and
gives them a magic force.’

Jean Cocteau and Pierre Johan

gderuiter How I love the foamy similarities between the gauzy fabric and the melted ice cream and the cluster of fallen petals! And there are so many other ways that you lead me from one riveting image to another in this fascinating series. This is a brilliant idea! Did you see this scene in American Beauty?

betsymurphy very sad, that we abuse out gifts!
Excellent set

makaid I love the combination of these images into a visual poem of sorts. The same thing really bothers me. More so the attitude than the actual trash. People don't mind ruining their environment.

DancingDolphin This topic is something that varies so much from country to country that it is possible to see that change can happen. Perhaps leading the change will be your contribution to Ireland.
DancingDolphin · 2008-12-15: 09:01
Nellinka Yes, you can fight it by making art of it.
I was never brave enough to tell unknown people that they shouldn't just drop trash on the street but there was a period when I picked up every single piece of rubbish in the street and actually there were people who got ashamed when they realized what I was doing.

KerBear What a great idea - these really are a great set of photographs! The two contrasting memories you mention are extremely interesting. This really sounds like a fantastic project... I'd be interested in staying updated as you move forward with it!

lalmendra Good idea. There is so much to do...
lalmendra · 2008-12-15: 20:01
etodd80 I love the project. I have the same disgusted feeling as you when someone just throws trash down without a second thought. I think I might be inclined to take their photo perhaps to shame them...although they probably wouldn't even notice. A very interesting contrast between Croatia and Ireland. Like I said, I love the project. The ice cream is still a big winner with me. As is the glove. Was the father really taken by the police before #5 was shot...that sure adds another layer to the shot.

irondragons 5, 14 and 15 are brilliant.

A lovely atmosphere is set through out these pictures. They all seem to have a story to tell, some happy stories, some sad stories. But either way - I'd like to thank you for the enjoyable viewing.

I'm awful with criticism, sorry :P
irondragons · 2008-12-16: 22:49
magnolak on your photos, even waste becomes poetic...cool.
magnolak · 2008-12-17: 02:21
Jarvo Wow, that's a lot of work you've put into that; and a lot of waste. The dead bird reminded me of an odd occurance that happened to me one day at about Christmas time. My friends and I were talking about all the pigeons in our town (Southend) and why you never saw a dead one. As I looked down there was a dead one by my feet. Spooky.
Jarvo · 2008-12-17: 16:18
GinaBrocker Genius. I give it a 10! I'm glad you have finally put these into a series, I always wanted to see them this way. One suggestion, crop the buildings out of the red carpet for the series sake and make this into a book lady! love you!
GinaBrocker · 2008-12-18: 15:32
CJLata Very interesting and creative.

reesechialpha I was amazed too at the amount of trash everywhere in Ireland. What a beautiful country to leave so messy. I hope your photos make someone think twice next time they drop something on the ground.
