My Father Calls Me - Son

2008.12.23
Tomislav Jurisic

Went to the funeral of my friends father. Thought of my own. Wish he stopped smoking. He said he will when I become a mother. Maybe I will do it. For him.

Those Winter Sundays
by Robert Hayden

Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I'd wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he'd call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love's austere and lonely offices?

P.S. I never noticed he did that until one friend asked: "Don't you think it's strange he calls you 'son'?"

makaid What an interesting ultimatum. I wish I could meet him.

dhulsmeyer he's a good looking man. don't you smoke, too?
dhulsmeyer · 2008-12-20: 20:21
Jarvo Great portrait.

As someone who lost his father to the evil weed, tell him to stop messing around with ultimatums. Because of smoking he never saw his grandchildren!

etodd80 He looks like a nice man. Being your father, he must be an interesting man. I'm sure there are many guys out there who would help you to get your dad to stop smoking...

asiamack a portrait is never more beautiful then when shot with a heart full of love and pride ~ one tip on portraiture i learnt from my own dad.

and, i see this in this portrait of your dad.

i agree with dhulsmeyer's question & etodd88 statement.

why not make a real effort to get what he wants ~ to be a grand dad ~ and could you not pardon him for that small vice of his? hahaha... just sharing my morning two cents worth

gderuiter Why do we take care of ourselves so often through caring about others? I didn't start taking proper care of my body until I was pregnant with my son, and it made me wonder why I hadn't thought to care that much for myself before then.

NellyBly Nice portrait...That's a copout to tell you he'll quit when you.....he should stop now while his lungs can start repairing themselves, it takes years! I lost my dad, sister, both father-in-laws to smoking..He can chew the nicotine gum! You don't have children in the hopes he'll stop, only he can do it..Have a nice holiday! :)

longimanus Have to admit, feel only envy when I look at this wonderful post. If mine was still alive, I`d call him every day for the rest of my life. And he has to quit for himself just as you have to become a mother for yourself and not for him :-)
