Coming Out Of The Darkness (photograph by Gina Brocker)

P.S. I heard on Friday of the death of a famous Serbian actress Sonja Savic of a heroin overdose in the September 2008. The whole generation of artists who came to prominence in the early 1980s was wiped out by the drug. I am just watching the documentary "Kao da je bilo nekad" about Yugoslav band EKV. Out of its six members five have died in the period from the 1992 - 2002 of addiction related causes. In the documentary, Sonja Savic (now dead herself) and the rest of her contemporaries are hinting at the possibility that the government planted cheap heroin in order to sabotage the art movement that was gaining too much in popularity. The half of a Serb in me (that usually means the paranoid part) thinks of this idea as plausible. I'll finish this with a quote from Sonja Savic, where she's talking about the people who idealize the old country:

"Ah ... some people think we were happy then. I was happy when I found the others who were equally unhappy as myself."

And my favorite film from the 1981 that talks about that generation. Decko koji obecava.

krx72 the search for escape fraught with such hell and destruction. hard hitting post. the images floating over the words. each a short step away from or closer to oblivion. peace to sonja savic the rest of her lost generation.

longimanus This is a hell of a post... I`m fallen in love with these images, just cant stop staring... Tell Gina it is the most inspiring and moving and touching portrait I`ve seen on this blog. Though about drogs I just generally think, there is always a choice and simply cant develop sympathy with its victims... but still, looking at the soul leaving that beautiful face makes me beleive they had no choice. Just still have to decide which one to save to be able to stare longer...
