It was a boring day at my home office. Paperwork was done, and the phone wasn't ringing. So I packed up Kaia, my 1-and-a-half-year-old German Shorthair Pointer and drove up the highway to some of the beautiful beaches my region has to offer. My original plan was China Beach, which is (or was as I was about to discover) a lovely 20 minute stroll from the parking lot through the rainforest. As I arrived on site, I meandered through the forest and remarked how many trees had fallen due to record wind storms we'd had this winter. Then, around a corner, my journey to the beach ended: at least 50 huge trees lay across the path to the beach. It was a sight both saddening and awe-inspiring. I could have trekked over them, but not with dog and camera gear in tow. So, we returned to the car and headed to French Beach, which isn't as scenic, but it was nice just the same. I love to photograph my dog. She is very photogenic and seems to love to pose for me. These three images were taken against the backdrop of the pounding surf, and hazy early-spring sunlight, diffused through the light clouds, giving that washed-out seaside look to the photographs. Editing was minimal, just some level correction. My favourite is the vertical shot.
