Back in June 2001 I was in New York for the first of two trips.
Walking along 5th Avenue you cannot miss New York Public Library (and in many ways one of New York's best kept tourist secrets - do the guided tour - its free and amazing!).
Guarding the entrance are two marble lions - called Patience and Fortitude. The lion theme is continued throughout the library, most especially with the drinking fountains located inside which are sadly no longer able to be used for drinking from.
The main reading room has a wonderful painted ceiling of blue sky and clouds to give the impression that the reader is sitting outside and also to let the imagination soar.
