U2, Elevation, NEC Birmingham, August 14th & 15th '01

2008.01.07
(l-r) The Edge, Bono, Adam Clayton

The Edge with one of his oldest guitars

Bono with Adam lurking behind

Edge actually does appear to have his eyes closed in this shot (!) and you can just make out Larry behind his drumkit

During "Until The End Of The World" Bono reaches round for support from Edge and almost throttles him...!

I especially like how Edge is backlit with one of the stage lights in this shot. He is pretty much standing over me at this point.

A much more stripped down stage on this tour, to the left of Edge is his ever growing collection of effects units and amps required to give him his distinctive sound.

Adam Clayton

My third U2 tour and they stopped off in my home town of Birmingham, England. By this time I was using a Canon Zoom compact camera with (if I can remember correctly!) ISO 400 Royal Gold Kodak print film.

Both nights I was lucky enough to bag a spot right in front of The Edge and that possibly explains why my shots are "Edge"-centric and he features in so many!

Being that close, to see how he actually plays is a treat in itself. The others in the band were all gelling well by this point on the tour but sadly, Bono's dad was terminally ill back in Dublin and overnight, between shows he flew home to be with him.

He explained, on the second night, "My old man is not very well at the moment, and it feels kind of weird being on tour when I should be there with him. I told him so, I said I feel really useless being away from home when you are ill and I should be with you. He said "You'd be useless if you were here!" "

Aside from what were two very emotional nights, I doubt I will ever be able to see U2 in such a small venue again - and be lucky enough to be THAT close to them too.
