Today is called White Saturday. This day should be dedicated to contemplation..We visited today some Romanesque churches. Most of them are surrounded by small village cemeteries...that brought memories back....I realized, that because my son is a fan of History of the 20th century, I have seen so many military cemeteries to last me a lifetime....The military cemeteries are different...hundreds of young men, name after name...some crosses with the sign: KNOWN TO GOD....what a difference to a small peacefull village cemetery....will we ever learn?!

pdsdville I'm afraid that as long as old men with egos rule, young men with an unknown life ahead of them will die.

????? so very sad.

BwannaDon These are easily the most powerful images I have seen here on photoblog. The arrangement is in keeping with tradition and respect for the lives of those who gave them, in rank and file with not one valued more than another. A fitting tribute to those who were willing to do what must be done at that time and paid the ultimate price. The photos from Verdun are the result of the "War to end all wars" and yet the set continues. Sad yes.... this is where the flowers have gone.

????? Will we ever learn? We strive for betterment passionately and that should stop us from the scenes posted here. Unfortunately that same passion can cause us to do some pretty cruel things as well.
